The Russian Research Institute for Integrated Water Management
and Protection (RosNIIVKh), founded in 1969, is the only branch
institute in the country, engaged in fundamental theoretical research
and reaching water management objectives. The Urals’ rapid industrialization
in the 60s, a vigorous growth of such water-consuming industries
as machine-building, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, quantitative
and qualitative depletion of water resources resulted in favorable
conditions for such an institute to be founded in Yekaterinburg.
The fact that water management is a strategically important
branch makes RosNIIVKh highly responsible for developing a national
policy and optimum system of water management.
RosNIIVKh with its divisions is an
integrated system, embracing practically every region of Russia.
There are RosNIIVKh’s affiliates in Saint-Petersburg, Novocherkassk,
Volgograd, Ufa, Chyta, Chelyabinsk, Vladivostok and Novosibyrsk.
An associated member of RosNIIVKh is the Institute of Natural
Systems Ecology of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. Besides, RosNIIVKh
owns the Sverdlovskoye pilot production and research-production
station on the shore of Lake Shartash. In 1997 one more affiliate
of RosNIIVKh was founded, that is the Institute of Water Management
At present RosNIIVKh works within the structure of Ministry of
Natural Resources and Urals Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences.
Being a large research foundation, it develops, coordinates and
implements numerous governmental orders, federal and regional target
water management programs.
The institute’s main scientific achievements are as follows.
It has developed a scientific theoretical
basis of water sector functioning and national system of water
It has created concepts for national policy on sustainable water
use, as well as for dealing with floods and drinking water
It has elaborated legislative and regulatory documentation on
basin agreements, water quality forecast, and development of
programs on basins and industrial conglomerates.
Not of the least importance are publishing activities of the
Institute, under its auspecies the Water of Russia newspaper,
periodical journals, monographs, brochures on key water topics are
published on a regular basis.
RosNIIVKh’s international relations consist of visit exchanges,
study tours for scientists, development and implementation of joint
research programs, scientific research information exchange.
Especially successful RosNIIVKh has
been cooperating with the Dutch Institute for Inland Water Management
and Waste Water Treatment (RIZA). France, Italy, Germany, China,
Finland,… the list has to be continued. Since 1995 RosNIIVKh has
been a member of the European Water Pollution Control Association
RosNIIVKh today is a leader of the Urals school of water
sciences, and over the last decades it has gained prestige all over
Russia. The Institute’s experts are willing to cooperate with
professionals in various fields and institutions, heads of firms and
companies interested in the rehabilitation of water bodies, the
latter being a guarantee of high life standards for present and
